Oh, Berlin 2.0

In most of our travels I tend to jump happily into every tourist trap possible. I get a certain kick out of guided tours, museums and many of the local cliches and I spend very little time trying to fit in. I’m a simple gal that way.

This time was no exception, and just like previous times, our Berlin trip was packed with tourist attractions.

The first place we got to see on our sightseeing tour was the Reichstag building.

The architecture of the Reichstag building is pretty impressive I must say and if you get all the way up into the glass dome you can see the most beautiful view of the entire city. If you put that aside, it was a pretty mellow afternoon in my opinion and there’s not much going on there. It was definitely worth the visit, but if you have relatively little time in Berlin I can’t say it’s a must see.

ברוב הטיולים שלנו אני קופצת בהתלהבות אל כל מלכודות התיירים האפשריות. אני מודה, אני מקבלת סוג של קיק מסיורים מודרכים, מוזיאונים וקלישאות מקומיות ומשקיעה מעט מאוד זמן בלעשות כמנהג יושבי המקום. אני אדם פשוט, כזה שמטייל בכובע קש בקיץ ובנעלי ספורט בסתיו.
גם הפעם הזו לא הייתה יוצאת דופן, ועל הטיול הברלינאי שלנו העמסנו באטרקציות לתייר המתחיל. מוצלחות יותר או פחות, באף אחת מהן לא נרשמה נפילה של ממש ועל רובן לא הייתי מוותרת.

אל הרייכסטאג (בניין הפרלמנט) הגענו בשעות הצהריים המאוחרות של היום הראשון לטיול. הארכיטקטורה שם די מרשימה ואם מגיעים עד למעלה רואים נוף יפהפה של העיר. מעבר לזה, הביקור היה די פושר מבחינתי ולא הרבה קורה שם.
בהחלט שווה לקפוץ אבל בעיני (ובעיני בלבד) לא מחייב אם יש לכם זמן מועט יחסית בעיר.

Our second day in Berlin began at the well known crossing point Checkpoint Charlie. All along the street beside the crossing point you can see information boards in which you can read all about the history of Checkpoint Charlie, and the history of Berlin as a divided city.

I highly recommend reading all about it, personally I found it very interesting.

Take a few steps more and you’ll see the Checkpoint Charlie museum. It was founded at 1962 and since then expanded monumentally.

I struggled. Perhaps because by the time I went into the museum I’ve already read plenty of info, but I’m thinking it probably wasn’t the only reason.

Although some of it was fascinating, the museum is loaded with information and was so packed I had a hard time knowing where to look first and found myself feeling highly frustrated pretty soon.

If you’re a museum junkie and a master navigator, this is the place for you.

Straight from the Checkpoint Charlie museum we decided to go to the East Side Gallery. The East Side Gallery is a section of the Berlin wall that is completely covered with paintings made by different artists from all parts of the world. It is well known and is probably the most obvious recommendation ever, but it is exactly what it’s made out to be, a must see.

Just walking through the city you’ll see plenty of street arts and beautiful paintings, and the TripAdvisor app even has a great extensive guide that can lead you through it. We followed the guide for a few hours and had a great time. I was highly impressed by an alley in Rosenthaler Strasse 39, go check it out.

היום השני שלנו בעיר היה בסימן אמנות רחוב בגדול אבל התחיל במעבר הגבול צ’ק פוינט צ’רלי. לאורך הרחוב שליד מעבר הגבול ישנם לוחות מידע שמספרים על ההיסטוריה של מעבר הגבול ושל ברלין כעיר מחולקת. אם אתם בעניין אני מאוד ממליצה לקרוא, לי היה מאוד מעניין באופן אישי להכיר זווית שיחסית פחות נחשפתי אליה בהיסטוריה של ברלין.

כמה צעדים אחר כך נמצא המוזיאון של צ’ק פוינט צ’רלי שהחל את דרכו בשנת 1962 ומאז תפח למימדי ענק.

אני נאבקתי. אולי אם לא הייתי קוראת במשך שעה ברחוב לפני שנכנסתי למוזיאון הייתה לי יותר סבלנות, אבל כשנכנסנו אל תוך המוזיאון הרגשתי בעיקר מבולבלת. המקום כל כך עמוס לעייפה ומלא מידע ומיצגים בכל פינה שקשה לדעת לאן להסתכל קודם ומצאתי את עצמי מתוסכלת די מהר.

אם אתם חיות מוזיאונים ונווטי על, זה המקום בשבילכם. מדובר במקום סופר אינפורמטיבי וחלקים ממנו היו מרתקים אבל אני ממש לא מצאתי את עצמי שם וגם מקס שמצטיין בעצבים הדוקים משלי התייאש בשלב מסוים.

מהמוזיאון המשכנו אל עבר האיסט סייד גאלרי, חלק מחומת ברלין שכולו מכוסה בציורים של אמנים שונים ואולי אחד הדברים המזוהים ביותר עם ברלין. זו ככל הנראה ההמלצה הכי ברורה מאליה שאתן לכם לאורך הפוסט אבל זה לחלוטין קטע שחובה להגיע אליו.
גם בשיטוטים רנדומליים בעיר תראו לא מעט אמנות רחוב וגרפיטי ובאפליקציית TripAdvisor נמצא גם מדריך מקיף על אמנות ששווה לראות בעיר ואיפה ניתן למצוא אותה. אנחנו הלכנו בעקבותיו במשך כמה שעות ומאוד נהנינו. בלטה לטובה סמטה ברחוב Rosenthaler Strasse 39.

Berlin is filled with great museums, all you have to do is choose your favorite topics and be on your way.

Since we didn’t wanna spend our entire trip inside different museums, we focused at the Museum Island and started with the Pergamon museum.

We chose to buy a museum pass which is valid for three days and includes entrance to all the museums at the Museum Island, plus a few extras including the jewish museum. It only costs 24 Euros a person, and if you’re a student you’ll pay half the price.

I’m a bit uncertain whether to tell you all about the Pergamon museum, since there are only few days left before it closes until further notice (closes at 28/9/14).

To sum it up, the museum is pretty unusual and is mainly about ancient Greece and Rome. Inside you can actually see giant authentic buildings that were brought and reassembled at the museum. I was totally left speechless and that’s not an easy thing to do. To fill in the blanks there’s also a great audio guide.

At the second floor of the Pergamon you’ll find the museum of islamic arts. I was head over heels in love with the overhaul esthetic of the pieces there, and was fascinated by a whole new world of colors and details.

The next museum we went to was the New Museum (Neues Museum). The New Museum is mostly about Ancient Egypt, when one of its highlights is the famous sculpture of Nefertiti. It is a huge museum, and is highly impressive in many ways.

Another interesting part of the museum is about Neanderthals. It includes facial reconstructions, neanderthals skeletons and lots of info about their way of living.

ברלין מלאה מוזיאונים בכל נושא אפשרי פחות או יותר ונשאר לכם רק לבחור. מאחר ולא רצינו להעביר את הטיול כולו בתוך מוזיאונים, התמקדנו באי המוזיאונים ופתחנו במוזיאון פרגמון המעולה (Pergamon Museum).
קנינו כרטיס כניסה התקף לשלושה ימים וכולל כניסה אל כל המוזיאונים באי ואל מספר מוזיאונים נוספים ביניהם גם המוזיאון היהודי. כרטיס כזה עולה בסך הכל 24 יורו לאדם, ואם אתם סטודנטים, בהצגת כרטיס סטודנט תוכלו לשלם חצי מהסכום.
אני קצת לא בטוחה אם להשקיע בטיזרים לגבי הפרגמון מאחר והוא פתוח לקהל בדיוק לעוד שבוע (עד ה-28/9/14) ואחר כך ייסגר וצפוי להיות סגור בכמה השנים הקרובות עד לפתיחה מחודשת. אקצר ואומר שמדובר במוזיאון די יוצא דופן כשבתוכו מבנים עתיקים ענקיים שהובאו אליו בשלמותם והורכבו בו מחדש. חלקים רבים מהמוזיאון עוסקים ביוון ורומא העתיקה ומלבד המוצגים ישנם הסברי אודיו שמחברים היטב את חלקי הפאזל ובונים את העניין בסיפור.
בקומה השנייה נמצא המוזיאון לאמנות איסלמית. גם הוא מאוד מיוחד והאסתטיקה של המוצגים בו השאירה אותי מרותקת ומוקסמת מעולם שלם של צבעים ופרטים. כלולים בו מוצגים מסוריה, הודו, ירדן ועוד רבות.

המוזיאון הבא שביקרנו בו היה המוזיאון החדש (Neues Museum). רוב המוצגים במוזיאון החדש עוסקים במצרים העתיקה כשאחד ההיילייטים הגדולים בו הוא הפסל המפורסם של נפרטיטי (ובמקרה המוצג היחיד שאסור לצלם). גם הוא מוזיאון ענק ומרשים בכל קנה מידה, כשבעוד שמקס התעמק במוצגים עצמם ובמידע אודותיהם, דעתי בעיקר הוסחה ע”י הדיטיילים שבעיצוב המוזיאון, כשכמעט בכל פינה יש משהו להתפעל ממנו.
חלק אחר ומעניין של המוזיאון עוסק באדם הניאנדרטלי וכולל שחזורי פנים, שלדים והמון מידע על אורח החיים של אותה תקופה.

The last museum we visited, and the one that is the “closest to home”, was the Jewish Museum. Besides being well known for its architecture which is very symbolic and thought provoking (BTW, if you add the extra charge and use the audio guide, you can hear all about the thought process behind the museum’s architecture), the museum’s exhibits portray the history of jewish people in Germany since the 10th century up until the establishment of the jewish state Israel to which today we lovingly call home. You can find at the museum some very personal stories and objects, along with the bigger picture of european jewish history.

There’s also a section at the museum dedicated to jewish culture and traditions. nothing new for me on that section, but I’ll venture a guess and speculate that it will probably be more interesting to those of you who aren’t familiar with the jewish culture.

We spent approximately 4 hours at the jewish museum so that one was a success as well.

While in Berlin I realized there are so many places I’d love to see while our stay. since then I’ve come to the understanding that there’s no way I can get everything done in a week, so I made some compromises.
On my list for our next trip: a tour through the Jewish Quarter, the Holocaust Memorial and the aquarium. I would also love to have a little bit more time on Kreuzberg.

המוזיאון האחרון בו ביקרנו ואולי ההכרחי ביותר לבקר בו הוא המוזיאון היהודי בשכונת קרויצברג. מלבד היותו ידוע בזכות הארכיטקטורה המיוחדת שכל דבר בה הוא סימבולי ומלא מחשבה (אגב, במדריך האודיו שבמוזיאון בתשלום נוסף, אפשר ללמוד הכל לגבי הארכיטקטורה של המקום, בתחילה מרתק ואחר כך גובל בפולחן אישיות לאדריכל דניאל ליבסקינד שתכנן את המוזיאון), המוצגים במוזיאון מגוללים את תולדות יהודי גרמניה החל מהמאה העשירית לספירה ובערך עד קום המדינה דרך סיפורים וחפצים אישיים ביחד עם תיאור גדול וכוללני יותר של תופעות לאורך ההיסטוריה. בנוסף יש חלק במוזיאון העוסק בתרבות ובמסורות היהודיות. מדריך האודיו בעיני היה פחות מוצלח במקרה של המוזיאון היהודי כשחלקים נכבדים ממנו עסקו במן “יהדות למתחילים” ולא חידשו לי המון. לעומת זאת, הפירוט המצורף למוצגים היה מעניין ובילינו במוזיאון קרוב לארבע שעות.

תוך כדי הטיול קלטתי בעצם כמה דברים אני עוד רוצה לעשות ולא את כולם הספקתי, אבל הגעתי לסוג השלמה לגבי זה. עד הטיול הבא בכל אופן. בראש סדר העדיפויות לטיול הבא יהיה סיור ברובע היהודי. עשינו סיור דומה בברצלונה והוא זכור לי כאחד הדברים המיוחדים בטיול, כך שכאן מעט התאכזבתי שלא הספקנו. פספוסים נוספים מצדנו היו אנדרטת השואה, האקווריום, וגם הייתי רוצה לבלות קצת יותר זמן בקרויצברג אבל אני מניחה שעוד כמה יעדים לפנינו לפני שאחזור שוב לברלין.
